Balancing Valve or Control Valve

What’s a Balancing Valve, Really

Think of a balancing valve like a traffic cop at an intersection—it doesn’t stop or start the traffic (flow), but it makes sure every lane gets its fair share. In a water-based HVAC system, this means ensuring each coil or zone gets exactly the right amount of flow, no more, no less.

You set it once, and it stays there. Unless the pressure changes… in which case a dynamic (automatic) balancing valve steps in and keeps things steady.

It’s perfect for:

  • New construction system startup

  • Retrofits where some zones get too hot or too cold

  • Systems with long pipe runs and uneven pressure

And What Does a Control Valve Do

A control valve, on the other hand, is the smart actor in the system. It listens to commands—maybe from a thermostat, a building management system, or a room sensor—and adjusts the flow in real time.

Too warm? It throttles down the hot water. Too cold? It opens up and lets more in. Want ultimate control? Use a modulating control valve or even better, a Pressure Independent Control Valve (PICV)—which does the job of both a control and balancing valve.

Use a control valve when:

  • You want individual room or zone temperature control

  • The load is variable (e.g., meeting rooms, offices)

  • Comfort and energy efficiency are key

So, Which One Should You Use

Short answer: both. Long answer? It depends on your system type.

  • For older systems or designs with manual control valves, pair them with manual or dynamic balancing valves.

  • For modern HVAC setups, especially variable flow systems, use PICVs—they save you labor, reduce callbacks, and improve comfort.

And don’t forget, balancing valves make commissioning smoother. Control valves make operation smarter.
